MURPHY HILL RESIDENCE
Renovation of a cozy Catskills home.
Mountain Living
A small Cape-style house north of the Pepacton Reservoir in Andes, NY was left partially renovated. The previous owner demolished and renovated an existing structure from the 1970s, removing an enormous deck that wrapped around the house that provided access to a second story apartment. Luckily, this was a designer’s dream of a blank canvas. With the infrastructural pieces already in place, we could focus on minor adjustments to bring more efficiency and spatial excitement to the home.
Our first step was to move the front door in order to consolidate circulation space in the home. This allowed us to make a second full bathroom, and a much larger living space. Our second move was increasing the size and position of the back sliding door. With a four-panel glass door, the landscape comes right into the home. Lastly, we moved a door from the living room that went under the stairs. By adding the pantry under the stairs, we created an opening to the side that allows for a hidden door from the kitchen to the utility space below. This frees up the living room wall for artwork.
Our focus has been on taking clues from the surroundings with natural materials and colors: Catskill red brick, live sawn white oak floors, blue slate floor tile, and rustic concrete.
This project is under construction and anticipated to be complete in April 2021.
